some delightful corn from Iowa

My mom is such a trip. She's 85 and one of the busiest, coolest and most vibrant people I know. Every now and then she does a bit of creative writing, and, if I do say so myself, she's pretty darn good at it.

Recently, Mom sent me an email with the subject line, "it's a'maize'ing". It reads as follows:
-------------
Imagine this.........

A highway patrolman hails an 87 year old driver steaming down a country road at 68 mph and asked the driver if he knew that he was going 68 mph.  The driver's response, "Oh no, I was looking at the crops."  The driver then showed the officer the ear of corn he had picked and began to tell him about the crops possibilities, etc. etc.  The officer then said it did seem to be a good ear of corn, advised the driver to slow down and walked away.  No citation, no ticket, oh the power of an ear of corn.  I call it "a maize ing"!!  Or was it a McCain -Palin diversionary tactic?
-----------------
OK, I found that utterly delightful, once I got over the horror of my 87 year old Dad going anything over 50 mph on any road these days. Back in the day, however, I used to call him "Mario Andretti" because he rarely drove under 90 mph on any road at that time. In fact, I think my dad might have set some kind of record for "most speeding tickets in a 12 month period" - possibly several consecutive years, actually. It was amazing - he never had a wreck. A million tickets for exceeding Mach 3, but no smash-ups. No wonder he wins fabulous prizes every year at the fair! Mr. McLuckypants, I'd say.

One other little observation - I was quite amused at Mom's little McCain-Palin reference. Amused because it was appropriate and clever, but also amused because Mom has never really been known to make political commentary as a matter of course. Amazing how she continues to evolve, as does my appreciation of her.

Lucky. All of us.
