a very long road trip - Day 2 - Ft. Lauderdale)

Mojo and Drummer in Ft. Lauderdale

Yes, it's not only that time of year, when our small immediate family makes the journey to our Mecca (aka Everly, IA) to do the traditional family Christmas with Mom & Dad, who are approaching their golden years (ie: they're pushing 90), but I also have pressing business in South Florida tomorrow that requires my presence. So, Mojo and I have hit the road for 790 miles so far of our 3,750 mile road trip (Asheville to Savannah to Ft. Lauderdale to Key Biscayne to Atlanta to St. Louis to Everly... then back to Asheville). Wow, my butt gets numb just typing that. By the end of this epic journey, I assume I'll be quite happy to remain stationary for awhile... at least 2-3 weeks until I have to return to South Florida for the same urgent business matter.

OK - don't get me wrong. I'm not exactly complaining about "having to go to South Florida" in December and January. For example, it's 10:45 pm and I'm sitting outside with my laptop wearing a t-shirt and capris... yeah, there are worse places to have to go in high winter.

So, I am planning to soak up all the sun and heat I can (which in reality probably won't be that much due to schedules, but more than I would be able to do north of Orlando at this point). And I'm seeing even more old friends this time that I haven't seen for a long while, so this should be a very good week, albeit a rather frenetic pace. But - hey - when in South Florida, run at a frenetic pace! It's the local way. I'm trying to blend.

Mojo has enjoyed this trip so far. He's only told me a couple of lame jokes, but otherwise his jokes have been very entertaining. He tends to nap a lot on the road, tho, because reading makes him carsick. Now that we're out of the car and in Lauderdale, he's loving playing with his gigantic friend, Drummer, the Great Dane. Drummer never really learned how to play because he was bred to be a show dog, but Mojo is patiently teaching him the wonders of fluffy toys and playing tug-o-war with about anything. Drummer seems to be enjoying it, a la Lurch from the Addams Family.

Who knows what this mega trek from the cold mountains to the balmy sub-tropics to the frigid, brutally cold upper Midwest will yield as far as story fodder. So far, it's been kind of an auto-pilot journey and rather uneventful. We did stop briefly in Port St. Lucie to see old friends, which was lovely, yet too brief. I hate feeling rushed so much, but that seems to be the course these days.

FYI, I have noticed that gas is cheapest in South Carolina - $1.39 was the lowest, tho I don't remember what town I was near. In parts of Georgia and Florida, it was as high as $1.85 - is it me, or is that kind of a big spread for a relatively small area?

Tomorrow it's supposed to be 80° here in Ft. Lauderdale... but you know what, I still wouldn't trade Asheville for this if it were 75-80° and sunny every single day of the year. But it is nice to visit right now.
